Matchups with 13 ranked teams marked the Cougars’ 2009-2010 season, which finished in fourth-place in the Mountain West Conference and ranked fourth in the Mountain Region with a 5-3 record.

Sophomore McCall Jones led the Cougars with a 30-8 overall record, 17-4 for the regular season, putting her on BYU’s top 10 list for wins in a season. During the season, Jones ranked as high as No. 33 nationally, ending as No. 41 nationally and No.1 in the Mountain Region, and was named MWC Player of the Year. Jones went undefeated in conference and secured six victories against ranked opponents. Jones competed in the ITA All-American Championships and was named to the Academic All-MWC team for spring as well as the All-MWC team for singles and doubles.

The NCAA invited Jones to play in its singles tournament—her first appearance at the NCAA tournament—but she lost in the first round to No. 3 Maria Sanchez from USC, who went on to the Elite Eight.

Jones was also chosen for the 2010 USTA Collegiate Team, becoming the only representative of the MWC on the 25-player team. She attended a training camp for the team, which ran from June 27-July 1 in Florida.

Jones paired up with Megan Price to win the BYU Invitational doubles tournament and reach the doubles consolation semifinals of the Cal Nike Invitational. The pair also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships and was ranked as high as No. 18 during the season, finishing at No. 36 nationally and No. 2 in region.

The team excelled in the classroom, with five players named to the Academic All-MWC team. Jones was joined by Price, Elle Carney, Elizaveta Ezhova and Aubrey Paul on the team.

Senior Kristina Doerr also received was named to the All-MWC Singles Team for the third year in a row. Doerr finished with a 17-15 record for the season, including a victory against No. 11 Jana Albers, which placed her as No. 16 in the region.

The team lost in the quarterfinals of the MWC Tournament to San Diego State, falling 4-2 to the Aztecs.

The Cougars lose seniors Doerr and Chie Hayasaka for next season, but have eight players returning. With a new coach and two new recruits, the Cougars look to further their success in the upcoming season.
