LOGAN -- After a weekend that saw the Cougars knock off the top two teams in the country, the No. 10 BYU women's volleyball team was defeated by Utah State 15-13, 15-8, 15-6 Tuesday in the Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah. The loss drops the Cougars to 6-2 overall while the Aggies improve to 5-3.
"We were emotionally dead from last week," BYU coach Elaine Michaelis said. "We laid it all on the line last week and just didn't have it tonight."
Utah State won the first game 15-13 after a battle. With the first game in hand, the Aggies won the next two games 15-8, 15-6 to give the Aggies their first win over the Cougars since 1980.
"I think if we would have got the first game from them we may have been alright," Michaelis said. "When they got that, though, they really started to go. They played really well tonight and we just didn't show up emotionally."
A bright spot in the dismal Cougar offense, which finished with a .167 team hitting percentage, was senior outside hitter Melissa Layton. Layton finished the night with 12 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Karina Puikkonen had 45 assists and seven digs in the match.
The Cougars return home Friday to host No. 13 Arizona at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.
