Before BYU
- Prepped at Mountain Crest High School where he was a three-year starter
- As a sophomore, he had three interceptions in the 4A quarterfinal playoff game against East High School
- In his junior season, he had 46 receptions for 737 yards and nine touchdowns on offense, and 36 tackles and six interceptions on defense
- As a senior, he recorded 58 receptions for 904 yards and 10 touchdowns to go along with 36 tackles and two interceptions
- In addition to playing safety, cornerback and wide receiver, he also ran the ball a few times, threw one pass for 45 yards and fielded punt returns
- Named to the Deseret News 4A All-State second team as a junior and the first team as a senior
- Was also a three-year starter for the Mustang's basketball team. He was named the All-Valley Player of the Year and Region 5 MVP, and made the All-State first team his junior and senior seasons while averaging 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game
- He also ran hurdles for the track team
