Hernaez earns first Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors

IRVING, Texas — No. 7 BYU women’s soccer freshman goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez received Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the first time, the league announced Wednesday morning.

The Cougars defeated Oklahoma State (3-0) and Oklahoma (2-0) last week, posting back-to-back shutouts and going a perfect 5-0 on the road in BYU’s first season in the Big 12 Conference. 

All of the Cougars' Big 12 weekly awards have been awarded to BYU’s defense, with Olivia Smith-Griffitts and Kendell Petersen receiving recognition earlier in the season.

Hernaez started in both road games for the Cougars last week, totaling 180 minutes on the pitch. She recorded a new career-high of seven saves against Oklahoma, claiming her third shutout of the season and second in a row. 

The Corona, Calif. native had a combined 13 saves between the two games, helping BYU maintain its undefeated streak in conference play.
