UC Davis defeats BYU in series finale

BYU dropped game three of its three game series with UC Davis, 9-5, on Saturday at Dobbins Stadium, giving the Aggies a 2-1 series win.

DAVIS, Calif. (Feb. 24) — BYU dropped game three of its three game series with UC Davis, 9-5, on Saturday at Dobbins Stadium, giving the Aggies a 2-1 series win.

UC Davis (4-2) jumped out to an early lead with two unearned runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage. The Aggies tacked on five more runs in the fourth on three hits and a Cougar error for a 7-0 lead. 

BYU (2-5) got on the board in the top of the sixth on an inside-the-park home run by Cooper Vest. UC Davis scored two more unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead to 9-1. 

The Cougars attempted a comeback with two runs in the eighth inning on a single by shortstop Brock Watkins that scored Cooper Vest and Collin Reuter, who had reached on a single and walk. BYU got two more in the ninth on a home run by Bryker Hurdsman with Easton Jones on board for a final score of 9-5. 

BYU outhit UC Davis nine to seven in the game but gave up four unearned runs on four errors in the loss. 

After beginning the season with an 11-day, seven-game road trip to Arizona and California, the Cougars return to Provo for the season's home-opener against former WCC foe Gonzaga at Miller Park, Feb. 29-March 2. The Thursday-Friday games will begin at 3 p.m MST, with the Saturday game slated for 1 p.m. MST. All three games will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as well as the BYU Radio App and BYU Radio 107.9 FM in the northern Utah market.
