Owens, Morrow homers fuel 9-1 victory over Trailblazers

BYU softball defeated Utah Tech 9-1 at Karl Brooks Field on Tuesday evening, powered by a pair of home runs from Lily Owens and Hailey Morrow.

ST. GEORGE, Utah — BYU softball defeated Utah Tech, 9-1 at Karl Brooks Field on Tuesday evening, powered by a pair of home runs from Lily Owens and Hailey Morrow.

The Cougars earned nine runs on ten hits through the run-rule contest to improve 18-12 on the season. Six runs came in the third inning alone, amidst two brief rain delays.

The Cougars got the first runs across the plate in the top of the second inning thanks to a Trailblazer error on a throw to first base. Maddie Udall got a walk followed by a Hailey Morrow single to set up the play. 

BYU quickly got out of the bottom of the second with three outs, highlighted by a double play  to catch a Utah Tech baserunner for the final out of the frame. 

The Cougars plated six in the top of the third to extend the lead 7-0. Lily Owens rocketed a solo shot over the left field fence to open up the inning. Hunter Ava knocked one to left field for a single moments later. Kelia Kamoku brought in another run and reached first on an error by the Utah Tech infield. Hailey Morrow then hit a three run home run before two rain delays ensued. The final run came on a fielder's choice to close the inning, 8-0.

The Trailblazers saw one run on two hits in the bottom half of the frame to bring the score to 8-1. 

Ailana Agbayani singled to tack on another run in the top of the fifth. The Cougars got a quick three outs in the home half of the fifth to end the contest on the run-rule, 9-1.

BYU will resume conference play, hosting Houston in a second-straight conference home series at Gail Miller Field, Thursday-Saturday, Mar. 28-30. All three games will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
