Bats fly as BYU defeats Houston, 11-3

BYU softball recorded 11 hits in its five-inning 11-3 victory over Houston on Thursday.

PROVO, Utah — BYU softball recorded 11 hits in its five-inning 11-3 victory over Houston at Gail Miller Field on Thursday afternoon.

The bats went off for BYU (19-12, 3-7 Big 12) as it plated 11 runs in the contest, including seven in the opening inning. The Cougars also benefitted from three Houston errors. Huntyr Ava led the team with three hits, joined by three other of her teammates with two apiece.

BYU batted around the order, bringing home seven runs in the bottom of the first. Huntyr Ava brought in a runner with an RBI double to right center field. Lily Owens hit a shot to second base for an RBI single on the next at bat.

Maddie Udall followed next with a single of her own to bring in another run. Keila Kamoku cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the center field wall. BYU brought in its seventh run on a Houston error.

Houston brought in two runs in the top of the second with two hits. The first came off an RBI single, followed by an infield groud out that brought the Houston runner on third home.

BYU moved the score to 8-2 in its half of the frame, set up by Huntyr Ava with a single down the left field line followed by a Maddie Udall RBI single up the middle. 

Two hits and a walk loaded the bases for Violet Zavodnik to hit a two RBI single in the bottom of the third. Ava moved to first after getting hit by the pitch to reload the bases, but the opportunity was squandered by a fly out and fly out as BYU ended the inning ahead 10-2. 

Houston saw a run come in the fourth on a solo shot over the center field wall. BYU fell into a jam when Houston loaded the bases later in the inning, but got out of the inning with a play at first to head to the dugout. 

After a leadoff double by Houston, BYU retired the side, including a diving snag by Maddie  Bejarano in left center.

Ava finished the game for BYU with a walk-off RBI single to left field that ended the contest via the run rule, 11-3.

BYU will conclude its three-game series against Houston with a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 29 beginning at 2 p.m. MDT. Both games will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
