SANTA CRUZ, Calif.— The BYU men’s golf team sits in eighth at the 77th Western Intercollegiate after the first 18 holes at Pasatiempo Golf Course after shooting a, 9-over-par 359. Zac Jones is in a tie for fifth at 2-under after carding four birdies in round one.

"I enjoy coaching at Pasatiempo more than any course we play all season," BYU Director of Golf Todd Miller said. "To be successful, you have to be a solid ball striker, have great touch, be creative, and deal with really good shots turning out bad. Although we didn’t have our best day the guys proved they can compete on this course. Zac was steady. His chip-in on the 7th hole was the highlight of the day and gave him some great momentum through the middle of his round."

Arizona currently holds the top spot at 2-under as a team, with Standford in second at 4-over. The next seven teams are all within six strokes.

Cooper Jones, Keanu Akina, and Max Brenchley are all tied for 22nd at 1-over-par with rounds of 71. Peter Kim and Brock Goyen are tied for 80th at 8-over.

"We played some good golf today," Z. Jones said. "You need to stay in it and stay patient, especially at Pasatiempo. I hit some good shots that didn’t end up good, but that’s what these greens will do. I made some birdies and kept myself in contention. This course is one of my favorites ever, and there are always cool stories and shots to talk about!"

The Cougars will continue with round two on Tuesday, with tee times beginning at 9:16 am PDT. A replay of round two will be shown on the Golf Channel beginning at 5 pm MDT on Tuesday. Live scoring can be found at GolfStat.com
