Jones, Goff lead BYU to 8-2 win over Utah Tech

Easton Jones recorded three RBI and Parker Goff had two doubles to guide BYU baseball to an 8-2 win over Utah Tech on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

PROVO, Utah — Easton Jones recorded three RBI and Parker Goff had two doubles to guide BYU baseball to an 8-2 win over Utah Tech on Tuesday night at Miller Park. 

The Cougars secured eight runs off of seven hits, with Goff recording a two-bagger on each of his two hits and Jones collection three RBIs off a double, a sacrifice fly and a walk. True freshman left fielder Ryker Schow scored three runs for the second time in as many games. 

"It was a good win," BYU head coach Trent Pratt said. "We needed to get back to playing clean baseball. I also thought our guys on the mound did a good job of throwing strikes tonight."

Utah Tech scored its only two runs of the night in the first inning but BYU was on the board soon after with Schow coming home on the Jones double to left, after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch.

Kuhio Aloy jumpstarted the Cougar bats in the second with a single to the left field corner. Brock Watkins and Parker Goff were then walked to load the bases and Crew Robinson walk to bring Aloy home and tie the game 2-2. A single from Luke Anderson brought Watkins in to go up 3-2. 

Goff secured a standup double with a hit to right field to start the bottom of the fourth. Robinson then reached base and sent Goff to third as Utah Tech failed to secure the tag of Goff on the fielder's choice attempt. Schow was walked to load the bases, followed by a walk for Jones to bring Goff in to score. Collin Reuter then singled to right field, bringing in Robinson and Schow, and upping BYU's lead to 6-2 by the end of the fourth. 

In the sixth, Anderson walked and Schow hit a single to center left, allowing Anderson to make it to third. Jones then sent a sacrifice fly to right that brought in Anderson and put BYU up 7-2. The Cougars' final run of the game came with Schow scoring following consecutive walks from Cooper Vest and Kuhio Aloy. 

Stone Cushing closed the game for the Cougars in the top of the ninth with two strikeouts. . 

The Cougars will face Oklahoma in a three-game series at Miller Park on April 18-20. Game one of the series is set for Thursday at 6 pm MDT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as well as BYU Radio 107.9/BYU Radio app.
