Cougars fall to Oklahoma State in Friday doubleheader

BYU baseball dropped games two and three of its series with Oklahoma State on Friday in Stillwater.

STILLWATER, Okla. — BYU baseball fell to No. 19 Oklahoma State, 11-5 and 12-5, in a doubleheader at O’Brate Stadium on Friday. 

GAME ONE

BYU scored five runs on nine hits while the Cowboys put up 11 runs on 10 hits. The Cougars got out to an early 3-0 lead and were later down one through the top of the sixth when Oklahoma State broke away with three runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.  

Collin Reuter got the scoring started for both teams with a solo shot to left that put BYU up 1-0 in the first. Ryker Schow extended the Cougars’ lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a two-run RBI single to right that scored Kuhio Aloy from third and Brock Watkins from second. Aloy opened the frame with a single to left center and Watkins reached base on a walk before advancing to second on a Parker Goff single to third. 

OSU found its footing and knotted the game 3-3 with a solo homer in the bottom of the third followed by a two-run blast to left center in the fourth. The Cowboys bolstered their lead to 6-3 with an RBI single and two-run blast in the fifth.

BYU respond in the top of the sixth with a homer to left center by Watkins that also scored Aloy. The Cougars were down 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth when OSU struck with three runs on a sacrifice fly, RBI single and RBI double. 

Two home runs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Cowboys a 11-5 victory.

GAME TWO

The Cougars lost the nightcap of Friday’s double header falling to the Cowboys, 12-5.

OSU (30-14, 14-7) scored 12 runs on nine hits, while BYU (16-24, 6-18) had five runs on four hits. The Cowboys, who are second in the Big 12 in home runs, overpowered the Cougars with 13 homers and 40 runs over the three-game series.

For the first time in the series Oklahoma State scored first taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

BYU answered with three runs in the top of the second for a 3-2 advantage. Brock Watkins got the scoring started with an infield RBI that plated Cooper Vest. One batter later, freshman outfielder Crew McChesney homered to centerfield with Ryker Schow aboard. The blast was McChesney’s first of his BYU career. 

The Cowboys responded with four runs of their own in the top half of the inning to lead 6-3. 

After two scoreless innings, OSU tacked on two more runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth for a commanding 12-3 lead. 

BYU third baseman Easton Jones finished off the scoring with a two-run blast in the eighth inning for a final score of 12-5. Jones’ home run, his 12th of the year, also scored Crew Robinson who had reached base on a double to right center. 

Up next, BYU will play four non-conference games next week before returning to Big 12 play. The Cougars will host Abilene Christian at Miller Park on Monday, April 29 at 11 a.m., before heading to Miami to take on the Hurricanes, May 2-4.
