Strong hitting powers Cougars to 12-4 victory over Trailblazers

BYU softball defeated Utah Tech 12-4 in five innings on Tuesday evening at Gail Miller Field, with home runs by Ailana and Aleia Agbayani leading the Cougars to victory.

PROVO, Utah — BYU softball defeated Utah Tech 12-4 in five innings on Tuesday evening at Gail Miller Field, with home runs by Ailana and Aleia Agbayani leading the Cougars to victory.

BYU improved to 21-13, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits. The visiting Trailblazers fell to 11-22, recording five hits and four runs. The Cougars faced a 4-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the fourth, where it tied the game up.

Batting through the order and putting up an eight-spot in the fifth, BYU earned a run-rule win on a walk-off bases-clearing double by Lily Owens, the Cougars' second walk-off in as many games.

BYU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Keila Kamoku reached on a fielder's choice. A two-out hit by Hailey Morrow and an RBI single from Aleia Agbayani put the Cougars ahead.

Utah Tech responded in the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead. BYU answered in the bottom of the fourth, with a leadoff double to left center field from Maddie Udall that set up an RBI double to right field from Kamoku before a two-run home run to center field from Aleia Agbayani evened the score at 4-4 heading into the top of the fifth inning. 

In the bottom of the fifth, BYU rallied with Huntyr Ava leading off with a single up the middle. Owens followed with a single to left, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Udall's RBI single then put BYU ahead 5-4.

Kamoku's RBI fielder's choice extended the lead to 6-4. Aleia Agbayani's RBI double made it 7-4, and Ailana Agbayani's two-run homer increased the margin to 9-4. The Cougars loaded the bases before Owens' game-ending, bases-clearing walk-off double to secured the 12-4 run-rule victory.
