Cougs Prep for second day of NCAA Regionals

After winning the tiebreaker in Wednesday’s dual meet against Boise State, the Cougars prepare for the second round of the NCAA Regionals competition against No. 2 LSU, No. 15 Minnesota and No. 18 Oregon State.

PROVO, Utah – After winning the tiebreaker in Wednesday’s dual meet against Boise State, the Cougars prepare for the second round of the NCAA Regionals competition against No. 2 LSU, No. 15 Minnesota and Oregon State.

After falling to the Broncos in the play-in meet of regionals last year, the Cougars beat Boise State 233.650-233.400 in yesterday’s competition. This was the first time BYU has won at the NCAA Championships on a tiebreaker.

Regionals Day 1

  • Brynlee Andersen scored BYU’s highest score of the day, with a 9.900 on the balance beam

  • BYU’s highest event score was a 49.150 on the balance beam

  • Senior Sydney Benson scored a 9.825 on both vault and floor

  • Anna Bramblett scored a 9.875 on bars, her 11th time this season scoring above a 9.8 on the apparatus

  • Eliza Millar-Crossman scored a 9.800 on floor and a 9.850 on the balance beam

FAMILIAR FACES. The Cougars have seen two of their three competitors this year, seeing both Minnesota and Oregon State at the Super 16 Vegas Meet, the first meet of the 2024 season. BYU lost to both teams, scoring a 195.900 while Minnesota won the quad with a 196.850 and Oregon State took home second with a 196.525.

COUGARS. BYU beat Boise State in the play-in meet of the NCAA Regionals in a matinee showdown on Wednesday, April 3. The Cougars scored a 195.750 before the tiebreaker and a 233.650 after all six scores were counted for each event for the tiebreaker. BYU will look to improve upon its individual and team scores in the second day of the Fayetteville Regional competition.

TIGERS. The No. 2 nationally ranked LSU gymnastics team and newly crowned SEC Champions earned the top seed for the Fayetteville Regional after going 19-3 (5-2 SEC) this season. Because the Tigers were selected as the No. 2 overall seed, they have secured their spot at the 2024 NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth Texas from April 18-20. This year’s NCAA Regional berth for the Tigers marks their 41st overall appearance in the postseason and 39th straight berth for the program. LSU owns 31 NCAA Championships appearances and 14 NCAA Regional championships.

GOPHERS. The No. 15 Minnesota women's gymnastics team capped off their regular season with a 16-6 (6-3 B1G) record and a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships with a score of 197.500. Minnesota will be making its 43rd NCAA Regionals appearance all-time in 2024 in year 50 of program history. The Gophers best performance of the season came two weeks ago in their senior day quad with a dazzling 197.725. They've gone over 197 four times in 2024.

BEAVERS. The Oregon State women’s gymnastics team ended its regular season with a 12-4 overall record, going 4-3 in Pac-12 competitions. The Beavers took home a fifth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships with a final score of 196.775. By making it to Arkansas, Oregon State has officially participated in an NCAA postseason event for 49-consecutive seasons. Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey was named a Pac-12 champion on bars and floor with her second career 10 on floor.

The top two finishers in tomorrow's meet will move on to the final day of NCAA Regionals on Saturday, April 6 at 6 p.m. MT.
