IRVING, Texas — BYU designated hitter Kuhio Aloy was today named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for his performance against Abilene Christian and Miami last week. The true freshman from Maui, Hawaii, led the Cougars to a 2-2 record, with wins over ACU at home and Miami on the road.

In 17 at bats over four games Aloy had 10 hits, with two HRs, two RBI, while scoring four runs and hitting .588. He produced multiple hits in all four games including two three-hit games versus the Hurricanes. Against ACU Aloy singled in the fifth inning and later scored what would be the winning run in an 8-6 victory over the Wildcats.

In game one at Miami, Aloy’s home run in the ninth inning tied the score at 2-2 and sent the game to extra innings. In BYU’s game three win over the Hurricanes, Aloy singled to lead off the sixth inning and later scored in what would be a 4-run inning, giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead. He later homered in the seventh to give BYU a 5-2 cushion in what would eventually be an 8-2 win.

Aloy currently leads the Big 12 in sac flies with seven and leads the Cougars in batting average (.307) and RBI (36). He is also second on the team in hits (50), home runs (8) and total bases (83).

The Big 12 Newcomer of the Week is Aloy’s first of his BYU career.
