Before BYU

High School - Mekeli didnt get a shot at American football until he arrived in Tarrytown, N.Y. back in 1972, and played only one season (his senior year)  before enrolling at BYU ... won Con Edison award for the State of New York (1974), was voted MVP in teh area ... Sleepy Hollow High won regional championship in White Plains ... he was coached by Bruce Thomas (Rhode Island) ... 3.5 GPA.



1975 | Sophomore Year

Earned starting berth ... ranked fifth in defensive statistics with 156 points ... was in several key goal line stands, most memorable being against ASU ... made two fumble recoveries, had five sacks and was in on 11 tackles ... very aggressive, unrelenting type player ... 23 hurries ... top quarterback sacker.
