PROVO, Utah – BYU women's soccer beat Idaho State 7-0 in its final exhibition game of the 2023 season at South Field on Saturday night.
Both Allie Fryer and Brecken Mozingo tallied braces for the Cougars, with Kendell Petersen, Bella Folino and Erin Bailey each scoring one. As a team, BYU took 37 total shots, with 18 being on frame.
The Bengals took only one shot through 90 minutes, leaving BYU goalies untested for most of the evening.
This win marks the second time in a row that the Cougars have beaten the Bengals 7-0, the last time being in the 2021 season.
First Half
The Cougars started fast from the get-go, with two goals in the first six minutes on the pitch. The first goal came in the third minute as defender Petersen, the senior from South Weber, broke away and rocketed the ball into the lower right side of the net. This is the first goal from Petersen since 2018.
Sophomore forward Fryer kept the momentum up with a goal of her own in the sixth minute, assisted by senior midfielder Olivia Wade-Katoa, bringing the score to 2-0.
In the 17th minute, Idaho State's Isabella Winton fouled Mozingo, giving the Cougars a free kick outside the 18-yard box. Mozingo fired the free kick to senior forward Folino, who tapped it in the bottom right of the goal, taking the 3-0 lead.
Fryer notched her second goal of the night in the 25th minute with assists from sophomore forward Ellie Walbruch and senior forward Rachel McCarthy.
Bailey turned a loose ball into another goal in the 37th minute to bring the score to 5-0 heading into halftime.
Second Half
Mozingo found the goal twice early in the second half. Her first came from a penalty kick after Bengal Brooklyn Kouns fouled Folino in the 52nd minute. Just two minutes later, Mozingo found the back of the net off a Folino assist, rounding out the 7-0 win over Idaho State.
BYU will return to South Field Thursday, Aug. 17 to face off against Saint Louis at 7 pm MDT for the first non-conference game of the 2023 season. The game will be carried by ESPN+.
