NORMAN, Okla. – BYU men’s golfers Tyson Shelley and David Timmins received Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) NCAA Division I All-America Scholars honors; the organization announced Wednesday morning.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior that participated in at least half of the team’s rounds, have a stroke average of 76.0 or lower, maintain a cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2 and be of high moral character to qualify for the All-America Scholar honors.

Shelley is a communications major and recently concluded his second year at BYU. While playing in all 14 tournaments during the 2022-23 season, Shelley finished with a 72.55 stroke average and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.91. During his sophomore campaign, Shelley recorded six top-25 finishes, five top 15s, four top 10s, and two top-5 finishes. He also qualified for and finished 12th at the Korn Ferry Utah Championship, earning him a start in the Pinnacle Bank Championship this week.

“I’ve been really impressed with how diligent Tyson has been with his school work even when we are on the road with so many distractions,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “He has been committed to getting good grades at BYU from day one.”

Timmins graduated from BYU in 2023 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.49. He also participated in all 2022-23 events with a scoring average of 72.14.

“David is one of the best we’ve had at organizing his time and caring for what is most important,” said Miller. “It’s nice to see him receive this honor.”

Timmins has moved on to play on PGA Tour Canada where he has played three events, making the cut at the ATB Classic where he finished in a tie for 40th.

“David and Tyson are the definition of student-athletes,” said head coach Bruce Brockbank. “They make time each day to be excellent in the classroom and on the course.”
