PALO ALTO, Calif. – BYU took the top three spots of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday evening at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
Landon Heemeyer may have finished second to teammate and 2024 Olympian James Corrigan but the freshman is now the eighth-fastest steeplechaser in program history following his performance underneath the lights at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
In just his third career 3,000m steeplechase, the native of Meridian, Idaho ran 8:33.72 to pass the 2006 NCAA Champion and two-time USATF Champion Josh McAdams. As of Friday evening, Heemeyer’s time is the 13thfastest in the country, moving ahead of Utah State’s Logan Garnica.
Corrigan has now won both steeplechase races he has run this season after crossing the finish line in 8:30.63. Isaac Hedengren, the seventh-fastest steeplechaser in program history, ran 8:38.72 to finish third with Jefferson McMullin running a personal-best time of 8:52.24 to finish eighth and Caleb Johnson coming in ninth at 9:04.26.
Mark Boyle finished 10th in section 1 of the 1,500-meters, running 3:48.96 in his first time running the distance. Brayden Packard finished 12th in the same heat in a time of 3:56.12.
In th penultimate event of the evening, Berkley Nance ran a personal best to finish 13th in the 5,000-meters. The freshman crossed the finish line in 13:41.45, a little more than a second faster than he ran on the same track earlier this month at the Stanford Invitational.
Aggie Invitational
Tyler Poole was the only Cougar to compete in Logan on Friday as the freshman finished fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.72m/153-3.
