The BYU women's soccer team posted its first shutout of the year Saturday night, handing Cal-Poly a 6-0 defeat in front of a home crowd of 1,616.
The Cougars were led by senior All-American Maren Hendershot, who tallied a goal and an assist in the victory.
BYU jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Karen Robbins-Wunderli just over two minutes into the game.
"Anytime you score early it's disheartening for the other team," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "It helps to put one away at the beginning of the game."
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead into the half, and then caught on fire midway through the second half, scoring three goals in less than a ten-minute span. Overall, BYU outshot Cal Ploy 25-12.
Cougars Jennie Christianson, Kim Lowe, Sara Reading and Jennifer Love joined Wunderli and Hendershot in scoring goals. Five other Cougars assisted on the goals.
"We had different people scoring. Everybody got to contribute," Rockwood said. "I couldn't be more proud. This was one of our strongest performances of the season against a good team. We're very excited about it."
The win improved BYU's record to 5-0 this season. The Cougars will host the University of Arizona next at BYU's South Field Monday at 4 p.m.
