Winston-Salem, NC-(Oct. 6, 2001) First-time opponents from the ACC have not been kind to BYU's 16th ranked women's soccer team this week. The Cougar women picked up their second straight loss, a 3-2 overtime decision to Wake Forest, Saturday.
Two back-to-back goals in the early minutes by BYU were not enough to hold off the strong effort by the Demon Deacons. The loss puts the Cougar record at 6-4-1 on the season while Wake Forest improves to 4-3-1.
Kim Devine and All-American Aleisha Cramer scored goals at the 13:25 and the 14:59 minute mark to give the visiting BYU team a 2-1 advantage after 45 minutes of action. Freshman Kimmie Davis was credited with an assist on the Cramer goal.
Wake Forest's Stacy Roeck tied up the game in the 53rd minute to send the game into overtime as neither team scored again. Ten minutes into the second 15-minute sudden death overtime period Roeck picked up her second goal of the game to give her team the win.
"Once again we had our chances to win the game , but we just couldn't put it away, especially in the overtime periods," said BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood. "This has been a very good learning experience for our young team. The trip will help us get better as the season progresses."
The Demon Deacons out shot the Cougars 33 to 17 in the 115 minutes of soccer action.
BYU opens MWC action next week at UNLV and at SDSU on Oct. 11 and 13.
