PROVO -- Behind the offensive firepower of senior All-American Aleisha Rose, the No. 12 Cougars recorded their fourth straight shutout of the season with a 5-0 win over Southern Utah University Monday night.
Rose, one of 15 players in the nation on the Hermann Trophy watch list, tallied four assists in the game setting a new BYU school record and South Stadium record for most assists in a single game.
"I've been a passer since I was little," said Rose after the game, "The girls all did an awesome job finishing the goals."
The Cougars started out the game a little slow, but picked up the tempo towards the end of the first period.
Senior Jennifer Fielding was the first Cougar to score as she headed in the ball off a pass from senior Lydia Ojuka. Ojuka then followed her assist with a goal of her own and Rose was credited with her first assist of the night.
It would take BYU less than two minutes to put in its third goal of the night this time coming off a corner kick by Rose to freshman Nicole Jensen who booted in the ball from 15 yards out giving the Cougars the 3-0 lead at the half.
"It is always a challenge when you come off of a big win like we had against No. 7 Tennessee on Friday," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "But I was pleased with our effort in the second half."
In the second half the Cougars and T-Birds continued to battle. Rose found senior Terra Bigelow in the 53rd minute to record her third goal of the night as Bigelow scored her first goal of the season.
With time running down freshman Bobbi Tillotson finished the scoring for the Cougars with the first goal of her collegiate career and freshman Annie Zwahlen and Rose were credited with the assists, and Rose set the new record.
With the win the No 12 Cougars improved to 3-0-1 on the season and will head to Kentucky this weekend to play in the Kentucky Tournament. On Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 (EDT) the Cougars face No. 14 Kentucky and then play Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 5:00 (EDT).
