LOS -- The BYU men's tennis team continued its play at the So Cal Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday in Los Angeles. Two doubles pairs will advance, while three Cougars remain in the consolation draws.
The veteran duo of Cassidy Mears and Jonathan Sanchez automatically advanced to the doubles round of 16 after their UCLA opponents withdrew from the match. Joining them on Friday will be Daniel Hwang and Evan Urbina who received a bye in the first round. Both Cougar teams will compete against Azusa Pacific opponents.
Thursday's singles matches weren't as kind to the Cougars as day one, with all BYU players seeing elimination from the main draw. However, a big win came for the Cougars in the first round when Urbina upset the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Matthieu Dehaine, from UCLA.
In the singles qualifying backdraw, two BYU teammates will be pitted against each other in the final match. Doubles partners Tyler Clonts and A.J. Young both defeated their respective LMU opponents to advance in the draw.
After a bye in the first round of main draw consolation, Sanchez will prepare to face UC-Riverside's Quoc Doan in the quarterfinals.
