SEATTLE -- Washington and the rain took a toll on BYU’s baseball team as the Huskies got a 9-3 victory Wednesday night.
A rain delay over two hours got BYU off to a slow start as the Cougars fell to a 28-22 record, while Washington improved to 24-25.
Home runs by Washington’s Jake Rife and Troy Scott doomed the Cougars. A 365-plus line shot by BYU’s Brandon Relf cleared the fence for a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
A Kent Walton double in the sixth paved the way for BYU’s third run when he was singled in by Michael Bowen.
The Cougars now take time for rare practices the end of this week when they return to Provo. Depending on the finish of teams in the Mountain West Conference, BYU could finish anywhere from second to fourth. A third or fourth place finish would mean BYU plays on Tuesday, while a second place finish gives that team a bye until Wednesday.
