LONG BEACH -- After day two of the Toshiba Classic, BYU’s men’s and women’s swim teams found themselves in fifth place, the women with 360 points and the men with 330.

Stanford leads both the men’s and women’s teams with 1,377.5 and 1,202.5 points, respectively. For the men, the University of Hawaii comes in second with 719, Air Force in third (608), UC San Diego in fourth (425) and the Cougars in fifth with 330 out of 13 teams, including two Mountain West Conference teams.

In second place for the women stands UC Berkeley with 775 points, San Diego State in third (473), UCLA in fourth (424) and the Cougars in fifth (360) out of 26 teams, including four MWC teams.

Starting off day two was a fifth-place finish by Jeff Ferrell, David Mason, Vytenis Slenys and Christian Keil in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:34.03. The women placed sixth with Candice Smith leading the way in the backstroke, Sara Jayne Christiansen Baldwin in the breaststroke, Kirsty Ferrell in the fly and Aleesha Miller anchoring in the freestyle, posting a time of 1:45.68.

In the 400 Individual Medley after Stanford swept the first five places, freshman Hayden Palmer placed seventh in the event with a preliminary time of 4:01.68 and a final time of 4:02.79. Rachel Grant placed sixth on the women’s side for the 400 IM with a final time of 4:17.84.

Slenys placed highest for the Cougars in the 100 fly in 36th with a time of 50.48 while K. Ferrell placed the highest for the women in 20th with a preliminary time of 56.69 and a final time of 56.91.

John Kendrick represented the men well in the 200 free, placing eighth in the event with a preliminary time of 1:40.28 and a final time of 1:40.91. Natasha Menezes placed 12th in the same event for the women with a final time of 1:50.11.

Mason found himself high in the rankings of the 100 breast, dropping more than a second from his preliminary time to his final time. He swam a 58.15 in the morning and a 57.23 in the evening finals. Baldwin finished 10th for the women in the same event with a time of 1:04.42.

J. Ferrell tallied a 13th-place finish in the 100 back with a preliminary time of 52.32 and a final time of 52.35. Smith placed ninth in the same event on the women’s side with a 56.99 in prelims and a 56.03 in the finals.

The team of Keil, Kendrick, Chad Fong and Mason finished sixth in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:55.08 for the men while the women finished fourth with a time of 7:28.88, swam by Grant, Michelle Menezes, Amy Xu and N. Menezes.
