Tied for first place in the latest MWC standings with a (14-7,6-1) record, the BYU women’s basketball team rounds out the first half of league play hosting Wyoming (16-4, 6-1) on Wed. Feb. 2. Game tips off at 7 p.m. The Cowgirls are tied with BYU for first place in the conference race.

The Cougar women then travel to Las Vegas to battle UNLV on Sat. Feb. 5 at 2:30 p.m., to start the second half of the 2011 MWC campaign.

--Bonham also tops the list in assists and steals with a total of 110 and 42 respectively.

--Jazmine Foreman has the team’s best free throw percentage at .842, 32-38 while freshman center Jennifer Hamson is tops in the field goal percentage category at .641, 50-78.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S LEAGUE OPPONENTS

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING

The Cowgirls are tied with the Cougars for first place in the latest MWC standings with a (16-4, 6-1) record. Wyoming’s lone league loss was to TCU on Jan. 12. The team returns four starters that compiled a 21-12 overall record finishing tied for fifth place in the MWC race and advanced to the third round of the WNIT. For the Cowgirls there are two players scoring in double figures with senior Hillary Carlson’s team high 15.2 points per game while grabbing 7.5 rebounds. She’s followed by another senior, Aubrey Vandiver who contributes 17.0 points and a team high 9.1 boards a contest. Jade Kennedy has the most assists on the team with a total of 86 to date and she ties with Vandiver in the steals category with 26 each. Head coach Joe Legerski is in his eighth season with the women’s basketball program.

Last Meeting

These two MWC foes met twice during the 2010 campaign with each team winning on its homecourt. In the game in Laramie on Jan. 19, the Cowgirls got the 69-54 win. Then in the game in Provo on Feb. 20, the Cougars picked up the 51-48 victory.

Wyoming and BYU also met during the 2010 postseason WNIT, with the Cougars getting the 67-63 win on Mar. 25 in Laramie. The victory advanced BYU to the quarterfinals of the tournament where they fell to eventual champion Cal.

UNLV

UNLV enters the week in sixth place in the most recent MWC standings with a (9-12, 2-5) record. The Rebels have captured league victories over Air Force and New Mexico and are at Utah on Tues. Feb. 1. Sophomore guard Kelli Thompson is leading the way in scoring for UNLV with 13.5 points while grabbing 3.4 boards a game. Junior forward Jamie Smith tops the team in the rebound category grabbing 7.8 rebounds per contest and she also has the most steals with 31 to date. Teammate Mia Bell has the most assists with a total of 93. Kathy Olivier enters her third season at the helm of UNLV’s women’s basketball program.

Last Meeting

These two teams opened the 2011 MWC race when they played in Provo on Jan. 5, 2011. In that game the Cougars picked up the 75-64 victory led by a season-high 19 points from guard Jazmine Foreman. Also impressive for BYU was Coriann Fraughton who recorded her second double-double of the season, scoring 15 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Mindy Bonham also reached double digits with 12 points, five boards and four assists. Haley Hall dished out a team and game high 10 assists. Despite being down by a point, 40-39 at the break, the Cougars came out in the second half and took the lead right backwith freshman Jennifer Hamson putting in a layup and Fraughton following itwith another two points. Foreman stole the ball from UNLV’s Byrd with 9:30 left in the game for a coast-to-coast layup, starting the Cougars on a 6-2 run that would secure the lead and take them to victory.

BYU finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field, 31 percent from three-point range and 74 from the line. They outrebounded the Rebels by one, 38-37 and tallied 26 points in the paint to their 10.

What’s Next

The BYU women’s basketball team continues league action on Wed. Feb. 9 when it hosts the Air Force Academy at 7 p.m. They then take a shorttrip to Salt Lake City for a matchup with instate rival, Utah on Sat. Feb. 12.
