CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – BYU track and field ran through the wind in a successful first day of the Virginia Challenge on Friday.
“I thought we had some good performances today from Mark Carlson, Shea Martinez and Jennica Redd,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “Most of the team will be running tomorrow. We have all been feeling the travel a little, and I feel tomorrow will be our best day of the meet.”
Carlson placed first overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.64. It marked the second meet this season Carlson has run under 52 seconds.
Martinez ran in the 800-meter invitational with both professional and college athletes. She finished in fourth place overall and was second among collegiate athletes participating in the race with a time of 2:06.23.
Redd set a personal record of 10:22.69 in the women’s 3000-meter steeple chase. The time was nearly nine seconds better than her previous best mark and ranks 23rd among current times in the Western Region.
