DENVER - Mayci Jones and Savannah Ware led No. 55 BYU women's tennis with wins in singles play, but the Cougars were not able to put any more points on the board Saturday on the way to a 5-2 defeat at the hands of No. 69 University of Denver.
"We played well at times today, but it was too inconsistent," BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer said. "Mayci and Savannah played well and represented in singles today."
BYU (2-2) fell behind early after losing the doubles point. Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson-Littlewood pulled out a 6-4 victory, but the other two Cougar duos of Jones/Toby MIclat and Ware/Nicolette Tran were unable to clinch the doubles point.
Despite the setback, BYU entered singles play strong. The Cougars took the first set in each of the first four singles matches. However, of the four matches, only Mayci Jones at No. 1 singles was able to hold on to a victory. She won 6-2, 7-5 in straight sets. Sheehan-Dizon, Tran and Miclat all lost sets two and three, giving the Pioneers (1-0) the points and the match. Ware was the only other Cougar to win on the day. She was also victorious in straight sets, beating her Denver opponent 6-0, 6-4.
"We started up a set in all four singles matches but lost focus and intensity in three of the four," Jones-Spencer said.
