PROVO, Utah—Strong singles and doubles play led the No. 58 BYU men's tennis team to a 4-0 sweep of Gonzaga at home Saturday afternoon.

"I was pleased with our players and how they bounced back with enough left in the tank to play today," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "They came out with a lot of energy and got the doubles point, and to see our guys to come through and start the WCC season this way is a great achievement on their part."

BYU (11-1, 2-0 WCC) started the match strong by winning the doubles point. Jeremy Bourgeois and Aidan Carrazedo quickly took down Gonzaga’s Jordan Smith and Hayden Smith, 6-2. Following their win, teammates John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan defeated the Bulldogs’ Vincente Varas and Connor Arend 6-3 to clinch the point for BYU. Keaton Cullimore and Andrey Goryachkov’s match was left unfinished at 4-3, as the doubles point had already been won.

Sullivan won the first singles point for the Cougars, beating Gonzaga’s Emilio Moreno 6-3, 6-2. Cullimore followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Gonzaga’s Ruadhan O’Sullivan for the third point of the night for BYU.

Goryachkov sealed the sweep for the Cougars with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jordan Smith, after battling back from a 0-3 score in the first set.

The Cougars head to New Mexico for their next match against the University of New Mexico on Friday, Mar. 4, at 4:30 p.m. MST.
