Highlights from day one of Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO – BYU track and field completed day one of competition at the Aztec Invitational at the SDSU Sports Deck on Friday, March 22.

The majority of BYU athletes competed in open events on Friday with the goal of continuing to the invite events on Saturday.

The Cougars opened competition in the hurdles and sprints events. Lindsay Yetter-Shirley finished fifth in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 14.48. In the men’s 110m hurdles, Ben Barton took second with a college-best 14.98. Caleb Witsken and Dallin Vorkink placed sixth and seventh with times of 15.73 and 15.81, respectively.

Haley Rogers clocked a personal-best time of 56.97 in the 400m and placed ninth. Ramarco Thompson finished second in the men’s 400m (49.36). In the women’s 100m, freshman Jaslyn Gardner ran a career-best 11.75 to place third. Derek Sorensen finished fifth (10.67) in the men’s 100m.

Elise Romney’s mark of 4.02m/13-2.25 earned her first-place finish in the women’s pole vault. Teammates Isabel Neal and Kyndal Stewart-Pothier tied for eighth place (3.57m/11-8.5). Alex Rios and Jameson Shirley finished 2 and 4 in the men’s pole vault with marks of 5.12m/16-9.75 and 4.82m/15-9.75, respectively. In his opener, Rios hit a potential regional-qualifying mark.

Barton’s 2.03m/6-8.0 performance in the men’s high jump secured a first-place finish. Freshman Dylan Kay finished third with a mark of 2.03m/6-8.0 and Vorkink followed in fourth place (1.83m/6-0). All-American Andrea Stapleton-Johnson opened up her outdoor season by winning the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.81m/5-11.25. Yetter-Shirley took third place (1.66m/5-5.25).

In the women’s long jump, Gardner jumped a career-best 5.68m/18-7.75 and placed seventh overall. Janice Hall took 14th with a career-best mark of 5.52m (18-1.50).

In the men’s shot put, the Cougars claimed the top-3 spots. Jefferson Jarvis finished first with a mark of 17.76m/58-3.75. True freshmen Austin Carter threw a mark of 17.11m/56-1.75 for a second-place finish and Harrison Gould followed in third (16.32m/53-6.5).

Sable Lohmeier took second in the women’s discus throw with a personal-best mark of 47.51m/155-10. Dailyn Tufuga followed in third with a mark of 45.98m/150-10. Leah Thompson placed fifth (45.98m/150-10) and Addisyn Peacock sixth (44.95m/145-5).

Three took spots in the top five in the men’s discus throw. Jacob Foutz finished second with a personal-best mark of 52.71m/172-11. Jefferson Jarvis and Harrison Gould took 3 and 5 with marks of 51.39/168-7 and 48.05m/157-7, respectively.

Jacob Foutz finished second with a 59.68m/195-9 mark in the men’s hammer throw invite. Four athletes from the women’s team placed in the javelin throw. Elyse Cuthbertson and Sydnee Muhlestein finished 3-4 with tosses of 41.58m/136-5 and 40.19/131-10, respectively.
