SAMMAMISH, Wash. — After two rain delays, the BYU women’s golf team finished day one of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite in fifth place.
“The delays made it a long day,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “We hope to have a much better day tomorrow.”
The rain delays caused the tournament to be shortened to just two 18-hole rounds instead of three after today’s second round was forced to be canceled. Teams will play a second and final round tomorrow morning.
Despite the poor weather, the Cougars fired a tournament-high 13 birdies Tuesday and recorded the lowest scoring average on the course’s par-five holes. BYU posted a first-round 306 (+18) and sits nine strokes behind current-leader UC Davis.
Allysha Mae Mateo and Anna Kennedy both ended the day in the top-20, with Mateo currently tied for seventh and Kennedy tied for 14th. Mateo posted a 75 (+3) Tuesday while Kennedy shot a 76 (+4).
Naomi Soifua carded the Cougars’ lone eagle on the day on the second hole en route to a first-round 77 (+5), putting her tied for 22nd heading into tomorrow’s final round. Annick Haczkiewicz is currently tied for 28th after shooting a 78 (+6) followed by Kerstin Fotu, who shot an 83 (+11) to tie her for 51st place.
Following UC Davis, tournament-host Washington, Rutgers and Sacramento State precede BYU in the top-five. Fellow WCC member San Francisco finished day one of the tournament tied for eighth.
