STANFORD, Calif. — BYU softball defeated the University of Illinois Chicago 6-1 on Friday afternoon in the Stanford Invitational, extending its winning streak to seven straight wins.

In the bottom of the second, the Cougars scored two unearned runs. First, Martha Epenesa reached first base on a fielding error and snuck her way to second. Brooke Hill-Barrington struck out swinging, then Alyssa Podhurcak was walked and stole second. Macy Simmons sent a ball deep to left field, allowing Epenesa and Podhurcak to score for a 2-0 lead for BYU.

BYU’s next run occurred in the bottom of third, when Huntyr Ava homered to left field, her third home run of the season, to extend BYU’s lead to 3-0.

UIC got its first and only run of the game in the top of the fifth. Then, in the bottom of the same inning, Violet Zavodnik scored an unearned run to put the score at 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Zavodnik sent a sacrifice fly enabling Podhurcak to score. HannahJo Mills reached on a fielding error by UIC’s first baseman, and Taryn Lennon scored, bringing the score to 6-1.

UIC attempted to battle back with a single in the top of the seventh, but a fly ball and double play by BYU’s second baseman Podhurcak and shortstop Marissa Chavez ended the game at 6-1.
