BYU shuts out Maine 14-0 in home opener

PROVO, Utah – Coming off a 14-5 route of Ball State in the Sun Devil Classic on Saturday, BYU softball dominated Maine 14-0 in the team’s home opener on Tuesday at Gail Miller Field.

The Cougars started the game off hot, scoring six runs in the first inning. Martha Epenesa led off with a single, followed immediately by an Alexis Gilio single. BYU started heating up as Violet Zavodnik used her at-bat to earn her first RBI of the night, sending Epenesa across the plate. Alyssa Podhurcak recorded the Cougars’ first double of the night, bringing home Gilio in the process. Zavodnik made her way around the diamond followed by an RBI by Marissa Chavez. BYU ended the inning with Epenesa recording two RBI with her second at-bat.

Maine found some composure in the second inning allowing only one BYU run as Macy Simmons batted in Zavodnik in the bottom of the second. The Black Bears ended the inning turning a double play.

BYU continued to add to its lead in the third, scoring the team’s eighth run as Barrington hit her first triple of the season, sending Simmons home. Barrington soon followed her teammate across the plate as a Maine error sent her in for the Cougars’ ninth run. Zavodnik earned her second RBI of the night with a deep double to score Gilio, followed by her third run as Mallory Barber then sent her home. Freshman Emma Andrewjeski also made her first career appearance at-bat for BYU at the end of the third.

The Cougars entered the fourth inning with an 11-0 lead and continued to pile on the runs. Taryn Lennon and Taylei Williams recorded their first runs of the night with Lennon coming in off of a Williams double. Williams was brought home with Barrington’s second RBI of the night. Barrington scored her third run of the game as Barber recorded her first RBI.

BYU forced an end to the game in the top of the fifth inning on a double play, taking out runners at first and second, enacting the NCAA 8-run rule.

The Cougars move on to host Idaho State University on Thursday, March 17 at 5 p.m MDT. The game will be broadcast on the BYUtv app and BYUtv.org.
