SAN DIEGO — BYU softball defeated the University of California, Berkeley 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in its final game of the San Diego Classic, going 4-0 on the week for a 13-4 overall record.

The Cougars came out swinging in the top of the first with four consecutive hits to start the game and earning a total of three runs. HannahJo Mills singled through the right side, Violet Zavodnik singled to centerfield and then Huntyr Ava doubled to centerfield for Mills to score BYU’s first run. Next, Macy Simmons singled through the left side and Zavodnik scored. Chavez then reached first base off a fielder’s choice and made it to second off of an error. As a result, Ava was able to score BYU’s third run for a quick 3-0 lead.

Through three innings, BYU’s pitcher Autumn Moffat-Korth had allowed just one hit. In total, Moffat-Korth and the BYU defense allowed zero runs and four hits over Cal.

In the top of the seventh inning, BYU boosted its lead by two runs when Zavodnik singled up the middle with the bases loaded and brought home Lauren Flanders and Taryn Lennon for a 5-0 score.

BYU handed Cal its fifth loss of the season, and is only one of two teams to shut out the Bears, with the other being a 1-0 loss against Ole Miss.

Up next, the Cougars will travel to Arizona for the ASU/GCU Invitational from March 10-12. They will play a total of five games against teams Arizona State, Rutgers, Grand Canyon, Ball State and UMKC.
