Cougars finish sixth at Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — BYU men’s golf fired a 5-under final round to finish sixth at 9-under par at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, Tuesday.

Despite an 18-under-par final round performance from the No. 8 Washington Huskies (287-278-270—835), unranked LSU (267-273-287—827) held on to win the team title by eight shots after posting a 37-under-par 54-hole total.

No. 15 Notre Dame (278-277-282—837) finished two shots back of the Huskies at 27-under to take third place. The San Diego Toreros (283-277-279—839) carded 25-under for three rounds to take fourth behind the Fighting Irish.

The Nevada Wolfpack posted rounds of 277-290-284—851 to round out the top five with the BYU Cougars (286-286-283—855) finishing sixth.

“We have been struggling a bit in the final round as of late, so it was nice to have our best stuff on the final day,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “To have three guys shoot under par in the same round is a step in the right direction. We are still leaving too many shots on the course which we hope to clean up before The Goodwin in a couple weeks.”

Zac Jones led the way for BYU and was the only Cougar to shoot three-straight rounds of par or better at the Lamkin. The freshman finished tied for 18th after firing rounds of 72-70-71—213 to notch his second top-20 finish as a Cougar.

“I’m excited for Zac. He played some solid golf on a tricky course,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “He only had two three putts all week on the toughest greens we play all year which is a great accomplishment.”

Cole Ponich carded the best round of the tournament for BYU with a 68 in the final round. The junior shot 73-74-68—215 to finish tied for 28th along with teammates Carson Lundell and Tyson Shelley. Lundell shot 71-71-73—215 and Shelley recorded rounds of 70-71-74—215.

David Timmins completed the scoring for the Cougars with rounds of 74-75-71—220.

“The team is playing fairly consistent this spring, but our rounds aren’t clean,” Miller said. “We are following up birdies and eagles with bogies and doubles which kills momentum and doesn’t put us in a position to go low. We are eager to get back to work so we can be ready for Stanford’s event in a few weeks.”

The Cougars have two weeks off before the tee it up at the Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course, Mar. 24-26.
