Wells wins north draw final as Patton Invite concludes

BYU men’s tennis freshman TJ Wells racked up two wins Saturday, including a defeat of Boise State’s Teague Burger in flight B’s north draw consolation final at the General Patton Invite.

BOISE, Idaho — BYU men’s tennis freshman TJ Wells racked up two wins Saturday, including a defeat of Boise State’s Teague Burger in flight B’s north draw consolation final at the General Patton Invite.

Wells went back and forth with Burger early in the first set of the final round, eventually going to a tiebreaker and falling 7-5. Although the second set was close again, he bounced back with a 7-5 win. The tournament format substitutes a super tiebreaker for the third set. In the super tiebreaker, the freshman held on for a 10-8 triumph to move to 5-5 overall during fall play.

Wells’ first victory of the day came over Tyler Dalos (Eastern Washington) 3-6, 6-1, [10-3], also in a super tiebreaker. After losing the first set, the Alpine, Utah native rebounded with a strong second set before the dominant finish.

Redd Owen competed in flight A’s north draw consolation semifinal, falling to Andras Necz (Montana State) 5-7, 6-3, [7-10]. Brian Chen took part in two matches as part of flight C, losing in two sets to Portland State’s Kristian Peev and Montana State’s Adrian Daniel in three sets with a score of 6-3, 2-6, [10-8].

  • Semifinal Round: Wells def. Tyler Dalos (Eastern Washington) 3-6, 6-1, [10-3]
  • Final Round: Wells def. Teague Burger (Boise State) 6-7 (5), 7-5, [10-8]

Flight C Singles - Group 1

  • Kristian Peev (Portland State) def. Chen 6-3, 7-6 (8)
  • Adrian Daniel (Montana State) def. Chen 6-3, 2-6, [10-8]

The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 1 for the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, California. Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs are qualifiers as Jack Barnett awaits his status at the tournament.
