Cougars to open season with two matches in Southern California

BYU men’s tennis will kick off the 2024 campaign this week with two road matches, competing at San Diego State on Thursday and UC San Diego on Saturday.

PROVO, Utah - BYU men’s tennis will kick off the 2024 campaign this week with two road matches, competing at San Diego State at 1 p.m. MST on Thursday and UC San Diego at 12 p.m. MST on Saturday.

Thursday’s match at San Diego State will be held at the Aztec Tennis Center with a live stream also provided, while Saturday’s contest at UC San Diego set to take place at the Northview Tennis Courts. Live scores for both matches will not be available.

BYU Notes

  • Thursday’s match at San Diego State will mark BYU’s opening contest of the Zack Warren era and his first as a collegiate head coach.
  • Saturday’s match at UC San Diego will be the Cougars’ third all-time meeting with the Tritons.
  • BYU’s first four contests of the season will be in California across a 15-day span.
  • Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs continued to establish themselves as a strong national duo last fall, checking in at No. 35 in the ITA’s final fall rankings released Nov. 15. The pair advanced to the Sweet 16 at the ITA National Fall Championships before ultimately falling in a closely-contested match with the now top-ranked doubles team in the country: Ohio State’s Robert Cash and JJ Tracy.
  • BYU welcomes three new additions in time for the 2024 spring season: Tygen Goldammer, David Duong and Alex Edmonston. Goldammer and Duong signed as highly touted five-star recruits last November, with both among the nation’s top 40 in singles. Edmonston joins the Cougars after having played one year under new BYU assistant coach Jonathan Sanchez at Concordia. There, he won PacWest Freshman of the Year.

San Diego State Notes

  • The Aztecs went 3-15 last season, with two wins at home.
  • SDSU is led by Gene Carswell, who enters his 21st season at the helm. He has guided the Aztecs to four Mountain West regular-season championships and one conference tournament title in addition to two NCAA tournament berths (2005, 2015).
  • San Diego State looks to reap the benefits of experience this year, returning all nine roster members from the 2022-23 campaign.

UC San Diego Notes

  • UC San Diego went 8-10 last season, with wins over Nevada, Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount, Villanova, Navy, Portland State, Hawai‘i Pacific, and The Citadel.
  • Timmer Willing begins his 12th season as head coach of UC San Diego men’s tennis. He has spent 23 years total on the UC San Diego staff after serving as an assistant coach for 11 years prior to his head coaching role.
  • Last year, the Tritons boasted three All-Big West athletes: Pelayo Rodriguez, Diego Tinoco and Daniel Traxler. All three return this year.

Last Meeting: BYU won 4-3 at UC San Diego on March 31, 2022. Wally Thayne collected a singles win along with Dominik Jakovljevic and Alex Lin as Matheus Leite/Mateo Vereau and Alex Lin/Otto Schreiner clinched the doubles point.
