INDIANAPOLIS — BYU men’s swimming closed the 2023-24 season with three final events at the NCAA Swim and Dive Championships at IU Natatorium on Saturday.
Brad Prolo and Jordan Tiffany competed in the Cougars’ final individual events, while Tiffany returned with Diego Camacho Salgado, Joshua Reed and Luigi Riva in the 400 free relay.
"The competition has been fierce and it has been wonderful to be here and compete said BYU head swimming coach Shari Skabelund. "I'm so proud of how each of our swimmers performed but even then, our guys are so hungry to get better."
Prolo swam 1:43.05 to finish 33rd in the 200 fly preliminary race. The senior from San Clemente, California took a top-35 spot over North Carolina’s Louis Dramm and Haakon Naughton of Arizona. 2024 marked a second-straight season in which Prolo qualified for nationals in the 200 fly. This season, Prolo shaved 0.45 seconds off his 200 fly time from the 2023 NCAA Championships.
Prolo’s 200 fly entry a season ago was the Cougars’ first since Paul Johnson in 1981. Prolo is the first BYU swimmer to reach nationals in back-to-back seasons in the 200 fly.
Tiffany’s third and final individual event of the weekend came in the 100 free prelims on Saturday. The junior from Pleasant Grove, Utah clocked 42.29, just six-hundredths of a second off a school record, and tied for 35th with Rafael Gu of Stanford. Tiffany’s 100 free entry was BYU’s sixth all-time at nationals and fastest yet.
BYU men’s swimming has now sent three individuals, each with three different entries, in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. Tiffany’s three in 2024 add to three from Prolo in 2023 and another trio of entries credited to Tanner Nelson in 2022.
Tiffany, Camacho Salgado, Reed and Riva combined to go 2:52.93 and take 24th in the 400 free relay championship. The BYU squad entered the meet ranked 25th nationally and improved by a spot with a finish over teams from Georgia Tech and Florida State. This Cougar foursome became the program’s first to reach nationals in the 400 free relay since Brett Allen, Chris Patience, Jorge Azevedo and Travis Price in 2007.
With consolation final scoring from Tiffany in the 200 individual medley and 100 fly, BYU finished 35th in the team scoring with seven points at the NCAA Championships. This marks the Cougars’ first team scoring since 2016. Utah, George Washington and Northwestern followed behind BYU in the team standings. BYU’s 2025 Big 12 Conference counterpart Arizona State won the team national title with 523.5 points.
