Cougars earn first Big 12 sweep with 8-5 win over Cyclones

BYU softball earned its first Big 12 sweep as the Cougars took down Iowa State 8-5.

PROVO, Utah  — BYU softball earned its first Big 12 sweep as it rallied to take down Iowa State, 8-5 at Gail Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars recorded their first sweep in their debut season in the Big 12 Conference. Saturday’s win featured eight runs on seven hits, highlighted by a home run from catcher Hailey Morrow.

Player Highlights

The Cougars started things off by plating three in the bottom of the first. Ailana Agbayani got BYU in the action with a double off the left center field wall. Maddie Bejarano brought in her teammate on the next at bat with an RBI single. Keila Kamoku reached first on an error by the Cyclones to bring in another run. The third and final run of the inning came when Morrow got hit by the pitch with the bases loaded.

The Cyclones responded with three runs in the top of the second. A two run shot over the left field wall followed by a pair of RBI doubles gave the Cyclones the lead 5-3. 

In the BYU side of the frame, the Cougars plated one to come within a run of Iowa State due to an RBI single from Owens to bring in Bejarano from third. 

Kate Dahle got BYU out of a jam with loaded bases in the top of the third to secure the final out of the inning with a strikeout, catching the Cyclone looking. 

The Cougars retook the lead at 6-5 in the bottom of the frame with two runs. Ailana Agbayani reached first on a fielder's choice that allowed Morrow to cross home plate. Moments later, Bejarano reached first in similar fashion to bring in Jaelynn Lambert

Morrow tacked on two more runs with a shot down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth. The Cougars kept the Cyclones at bay to take the victory 8-5 and earn their first Big 12 sweep.
