On week two of fall camp

“Yeah, now that we have the hats on, it’s a little different, but the guys are doing a really good job. Coaches are doing a great job and we’ve got some good film. I would have to say we have way more in terms of install with our offense and defense than we’ve had in years past. It’s hurting some of the young guys that haven’t been around, but we have to do it that way to get the team ready. The mistakes are mostly the young guys. We had some administrative mistakes today, like bobbled snaps, offsides, false starts, stuff like that. We’ll clean that up, but that’s part of it. We’ve got to be a lot better in terms of execution and not making those mistakes.”

On bringing newcomers up to speed

“I think the mistakes are fixable in terms of just focus. The other mistakes that are happening are again, giving the guys opportunities to make plays. I know there is a lot going in there and that there is a benefit to the guys that have been around longer, and have been used as offense and defense, so with the young guys, it’s one of those things where the classroom has to move as fast as what we need to get done, and a lot of those guys have to drink from the firehose right now. They need to get used to it and the more they study, the easier it will get. They’re getting reps, and we’ll just have to keep working with it. It’s good film for us to work on, and I know that eventually the younger guys will benefit from it.”

On the quarterbacks seperating themselves from eachother

“In some ways they have. They go back-and-forth. I don’t know if it’s enough yet to separate them. It’s also difficult when you’re working with the ones on the offensive line instead of the twos, so we are taking that into account, and also the receivers and the DBs. We factor everything in. It’s all about making sure that our execution is the best and that we aren’t making mistakes. I think the quarterbacks are doing a great job. I’m pleased with the progress. All the guys are getting better, and I think the quarterbacks are improving quite a bit everyday.”

On scrimmaging

“We will do some live work. Each quarterback will have time with the ones on the offensive line and the No. 1 receivers. That will be when we see real football and tackling. The quarterbacks won't be live but we can gauge what the team is doing then. Once we get to running drives and getting points in a scrimmage situation it’ll be better to look at the competition.”

On transfers getting a year in the system

“It makes a big difference. The natural process is that they will be more comfortable with the playbook and with their role. Some of the guys don’t have the comfort, but I think if you’re a defensive player that played at Weber State, like Eddie Heckard did for us last year, you’re going to be able to function at a higher level right away.”

On the physicality of practice

“We are just trying to keep everyone healthy at this point but it think it has been physical.”

On who's stepping up on defense

“A big one is Sione Moa. He’s been flying around getting interceptions, tackles-for-loss and making an impact.”

On the strengths of the younger defensive players

“They are physical and technically sound so that makes all us older guys want to push harder.”

On where he will play in the defensive backfield this season

“Wherever the ball is. I just want to be around the ball. Wherever they need me I’m fine with that.”
