LA JOLLA, Calif. - BYU men’s tennis picked up its first win as a Big 12 member on Saturday afternoon, defeating UC San Diego 5-2 at the Northview Tennis Courts.

The Cougars (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) took the doubles point with wins from Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs along with Jack Barnett and Redd Owen. Four singles matches were then won by Barnett, Thayne, Owen and Tygen Goldammer.

"Great road win in San Diego today," said BYU head men's tennis coach Zack Warren. "The guys were focused, came out really strong in doubles and were able to maintain that level in singles. Proud of these guys, they are exceptional representatives of the Y and that was on display once again today."

The win also marked a first for the Cougars under Warren.

Barnett wrapped up first for the Cougars, remaining focused from start to finish as he refused to give opponent Phillip Lan any room in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.

Thayne played solid at the baseline while capitalizing on opportunities to come forward to the net in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Carson Lee. Fuchs dropped a tough three-set contest to Diogo Tinoco. The junior had set point opportunities in the first set before falling in a tiebreaker. After falling 6-4 in the second set, the match would conclude with a third-set tiebreaker. Despite a late lead, Fuchs fell 11-9.

Wells finished next with a 6-4, 6-3 setback.

In Goldammer’s first collegiate win, the freshman put together a solid super tiebreaker performance to win 10-6 to seal the three-set victory. Refusing to back down, he remained composed despite a 3-6 loss in the second set.

Owen stayed dialed in from start to finish and not letting off the gas in a 6-1, 6-2 victory. With the win, the sophomore joined Barnett in moving to 4-0 in doubles and singles play over the first two matches.

With no matches scheduled next week, the Cougars will next prepare for a Jan. 25 contest at former WCC foe Loyola Marymount. The start time is yet to be announced.
