AUSTIN, Texas — College Sports Communicators (CSC) named Zach Fuchs and Redd Owen to the Academic All-District men’s tennis team Tuesday for their academic and athletic accomplishments this season.
Academic All-District honors are the first step in CSC’s Academic All-America program, which seeks to recognize the top student-athletes in the nation. The organization began the program in 1952.
Athletes must hold a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher in addition to competing in at least 70 percent of team matches to be selected to an Academic All-District team. Nominees must also be at least a sophomore and enrolled in their current school for one calendar year.
Fuchs and Owen have earned cumulative GPA’s of 3.60 and 3.98, respectively.
An economics major, Fuchs has 64 singles and 58 doubles career appearances. He and teammate Wally Thayne tallied 10 doubles wins to rank as high as No. 71 in the April 16 ITA doubles rankings. The duo amassed two ranked doubles wins in Big 12 play and was recently awarded the 2023-24 Big 12 No. 1 Doubles Position Co-Championship. The junior also totaled 10 singles wins at the No. 3 slot this year, including a seven-match win streak from Jan. 30-Feb. 29.
Redd Owen appeared in all 22 dual matches for his sophomore campaign. The philosophy major finished second in the team singles win count with 12 at No. 4 singles, starting off the season 10-2. 11 of his 12 singles wins came in straight sets. He and senior Jack Barnett went 11-7 in doubles play, registering eight victories in a row from Jan. 30-March 8.
