Garnett named Big 12 Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week

Senior pole vaulter Maren Garnett was named the Big 12 Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

IRVING, Texas — BYU women's track and field pole vaulter Maren Garnett was named the Big 12 Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

The senior from Spearman, Texas broke BYU's indoor school record with a clearance of 4.45m/14-7.25 on Jan. 11 at the BYU Cougar Invitational. Garnett's vault currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Big 12.

"I am excited for Maren," said jumps and multis coach Tiffany Hogan. "She has been very intentional in her workouts and it is paying off."

Garnett's honor is BYU Track and Field's first Big 12 Athlete of the Week award since joining the conference in 2023. 

"I think this is just the beginning for Maren," said pole vault coach Rick McWhorter. "She is so dialed in right now. I think there are more awards and honors that will be coming her way."

Garnett and the BYU sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws will travel to New York City for the Dr. Sander Schorcher Jan. 24-25 at The Armory Track & Field Center.
