True freshman Tyler Mathews ran 1:46.62 at the 2024 Husky Invitational in Seattle, Washington on Saturday to land atop the school record board. Mathews has quickly climbed the program top-10 list having previously ran 1:47.27 just two weeks prior at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic. Shaquille Walker previously held the school record with a 1:46.97 outing in 2016.
"Tyler Mathews breaking the school record in the 800 as a true freshman is so impressive," said middle-distance coach Ryan Waite. "Shaquille Walker was one of the top 800 meter runners in the U.S. so you can only imagine how excited we are to see the trajectory Tyler is on."

The sprints showed out in New Mexico with records in the 400m and 4x400m relay events being broken.
Josh Taylor crossed the finish of the individual event in 45.85. It marks the second time Taylor has held the school record, having reclaimed it after teammate Trey Jackson took the title last season. Jackson had an impressive day himself with a 46.12 outing for a new personal best.
“I’ve hit a plateau in my performance for quite a while but I just kept working hard and believing in myself and it came together today,” said Taylor.
The 4x400m relay squad finished in 3:04.67 for a new program record. The crew consisted of Eli Hazlett, Trey Jackson, Ty Oustrich and Taylor.
"It was an incredible weekend for the squad," said sprints coach Kyle Grossarth. "They came in with a lot of self belief and performed very well. To come home with two school records is definitely icing on the cake."
