LOS ANGELES — BYU baseball dropped a midweek game to UCLA, 15-4, on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-3 on the year, while the Bruins improve to 4-0. After an off-day Wednesday, BYU will return to action on Thursday with a three-game series, Feb. 20-22, at CSUN in Northridge, California. Game Summary
UCLA struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a run on a double, hit batter and a wild pitch for a 1-0 advantage. After a scoreless second inning, the Bruins tacked on another run in the third on a single and a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.
BYU answered with a run of its own in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half, 2-1. With one out Cooper Vest doubled to left and advanced to third on an infield groundball by Luke Anderson. Bryker Hurdsman then reached on a throwing error, allowing Vest to score.
The Cougars struck for three additional runs in the fifth on three hits, combined with two hit batters for a 4-2 advantage. With Erickson on first and one out, McChesney singled through the right side and advanced to second on the throw to third. Ryder Robinson then singled to score Erickson and move McChesney to third. A sacrifice fly from Easton Jones scored McChesney with the second run of the inning. Vest was then hit by a pitch that moved Robinson to second where he scored on an Anderson single to right.
UCLA picked up four runs in the sixth without a hit on six Cougar walks and a hit batter to take a 6-4 lead. The Bruins then added eight runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth for a final score of 15-4.
