BYU looks to sweep the season series against the Sun Devils on the same day that BYU retires the jersey of three-time All-American Tresa Spaulding.

PROVO, Utah — On the day that BYU lifts the jersey of three-time All-American Tresa Spaulding to the Marriott Center rafters, the Cougars look to sweep the season series against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. MT with the game streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast live with Jason Shepherd on BYU Radio, byuradio.org and the BYU Radio App. 

Matchup Breakdown
BYU and Arizona State have met 12 times in series history with the Cougars holding an 8-4 advantage all-time. 

The last meeting came on Feb. 1, 2025, as BYU handed Arizona State a 77-67 defeat at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe. Kambre Barber recorded her first-career double-double in the win with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

WHAT'S AT STAKE  ||  With a win, BYU would sweep the season series against the Sun Devils having won the first match-up in Tempe, 77-67. The Cougars would also improve to 9-4 all-time against ASU.

BYU is also retiring the jersey of three-time All-American Tresa Spaulding Hamson at halftime of Saturday’s game. 

FACING FAMILIAR FOES  ||  Saturday’s match-up with Arizona State is the Cougars’ second repeat opponent this season. BYU has played in seven rematches dating back to the 2023-24 season and holds a 2-5 record in Big 12 conference rematches.

VALUING THE BASKETBALL  ||  Ball security is crucial for BYU. In Big 12 play, the Cougars have committed 18.8 turnovers and opponents have scored 19.4 points off giveaways per game. In wins this season, BYU only coughs it up 14.8 times and surrenders 12.8 points off turnovers. In losses, BYU averages 19.2 giveaways and 19.2 points given up.

FINISHING POSSESSIONS  ||  Crashing the defensive glass has been a point of emphasis for Whiting’s squad. BYU has given up 11.7 offensive boards and 12.7 second-chance points in Big 12 games. In their four conference wins over Houston, ASU, UCF and Oklahoma State, BYU only surrendered 10 O-boards and 9.3 second-chance points.

WHITING'S CONSISTENT CONTRIBUTIONS  ||  Despite a slight downtick in scoring this season, Amari Whiting has done what she does best — defend. The sophomore guard is the second-leading rebounder for the Cougars at 5.4 rebounds per game. Whiting also leads BYU in steals per game with 1.96 takeaways which is good for 9th in the conference. On the offensive side, she and Gibb lead the Cougs in assists per game with 4.0 dimes and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.52, good for 16th in the Big 12.

Whiting scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, going 4-foor-7 from the foul line in the loss to Arizona. The sophomore guard also recorded four assists, three rebounds and three steals in Tucson. 

COUGAR ASSIST CLUB  ||  BYU has assisted on 396-of-657 (.603) field goals this year and has had three or more players finish in double-figures in 15 games. The Cougars have assisted on 80-of-113 made field goals in conference wins this season for a 70.8 percent assist rate.
