LA JOLLA, Calif. — BYU softball beat Portland State in five innings, 9-1 in game two of a doubleheader at Triton Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) raced out to a 7-0 lead through two innings before scoring another pair of runs late in the fifth, earning their third-straight run-rule victory to open the 2025 season and finishing the La Jolla Invitational 3-0.

Player Highlights

BYU plated two runs in the first inning as Hailey Morrow reached on a fielder’s choice and Lily Owens on an error. Morrow would score on a pop up and Owens came home on a Keila Kamoku single.

The Cougars then put up a five spot in the second inning to go in front 7-0. Danica Acosta singled and Aleia Agbayani was hit by a pitch before Morrow hammered a three-run homer to left center. Owens singled into the center field, advanced to second on an error and third on a wild pitch, and tagged up to score to a pop out down the right field line. Kamoku got hit by the first pitch she saw and scored after a walk, passed ball and wild pitch for the seven run advantage.

Portland State got a run back in the third after a hit batter, stolen base, passed ball and sacrifice fly, making it 7-1, BYU.

After scoreless third and fourth innings, Miranda Mansfield tripled down the right field line in the fifth. She came home to score as Acosta beat out an infield single, who would later steal second. Jaelynn Lambert then poked a slap single into center field, scoring Acosta and closing out the Cougars’ second run-rule win of the day.

BYU will head to Mexico next week for five games at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, beginning with North Dakota State on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at noon CT. All five games will be streamed on FloCollege.
