PROVO, Utah — Despite back-to-back home runs from Lily Owens and Hailey Morrow, BYU softball fell to Utah Valley, 6-4 at Gail Miller Field on Tuesday night.

Runners left on base proved to be a main difference as the Cougars stranded nine to the Wolverines’ three.

BYU started the night holding Utah Valley scoreless through the first inning with Gianna Mares retiring the side in three outs. 

The Wolverines came atop the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second. Utah Valley tacked on three more runs in the top of the third inning followed by an RBI single in the fourth to move up 5-0 on the Cougars. 

The Cougars saw a spark in the bottom of the fourth with a single from Maddy Udall-Woolley, but the effort was thwarted as the Wolverines ended the inning. 

BYU batted through the order in the fifth, landing three runs across the plate with a home run by Owens followed by another from Morrow. Utah Valley closed the opportunity for further runs to end the inning with BYU stranding two on base. 

Utah Valley scored their sixth run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double. 

The Cougars saw moments in the bottom of the sixth and seventh frames but the efforts were in vain as Utah Valley won the contest, 6-4.
