Davis, Little Chambers pace No. 16 Cougars in sweep of Aggies

BYU overcame an eight-point deficit in the third set to earn its sixth-straight sweep.

LOGAN, Utah — Outside hitters Suli Davis and Claire Little Chambers combined for 26 kills as No. 16 BYU women’s volleyball swept Utah State (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Thursday night.

The Cougars (11-0, 0-0 Big 12) overcame an eight-point deficit in the final frame to complete their sixth-consecutive sweep on the year. BYU outhit Utah State .316 to .258, recording six more kills than the Aggies.

Also posting five more aces and three less service errors than USU, BYU out-blocked Utah State, seven to five as well. Davis finished with a match-high 15 kills on a .379 clip, and was two digs shy of her second-straight double-double.

Little Chambers added 11 kills of her own, while Brielle Kemavor had eight, hitting .500, to go along with five blocks. Abby Hoybjerg and Sophia Callahan both posted four. Alex Bower tallied 37 assists, while Emma Barbero had nine digs and three aces, both match highs.

Set 1
Three Davis kills paced BYU as the two teams traded points early. A Barbero ace and Hoybjerg kill capped off a 4-0 run that put the Cougars in front, 7-4.

Going back-and-forth once more, a Little Chambers kill and Bower ace fueled a 3-0 run that spanned a media timeout and put BYU ahead, 16-11. Callahan got on the board with a kill, and Utah State took its first timeout at 18-13.

After a Davis-Hoybjerg double block, Brielle Kemavor quick hitter and Davis kill, the Aggies called their second timeout with the Cougars leading 22-15. Kills by Bower and Davis gave BYU set point, which Little Chambers finished off two points later, 25-18.

Set 2
Tied at three, the Cougars reeled off four straight, fueled by two Davis kills and a Bower-Kemavor double block to force an early USU timeout at 7-3. Trading points from there, an ace and dump kill by Bower, followed by a Callahan overpass kill then made it 13-8, BYU.

Hoybjerg scored on a quick hitter, but a 6-1 Utah State run that spanned a Cougar timeout tied the set at 15. Kemavor landed a tip kill and Barbero’s second ace made way for a 3-0 run that forced the Aggies’ second timeout with BYU in front, 19-16.

Little Chambers sandwiched a Hoybjerg overpass kill with two kills of her own, a cross court shot and another out of the back row to get BYU set point, which Davis quickly closed out on a kill off the block, 25-19.

Set 3
The Cougars got off to a quick start with a Kemavor-Callahan double block and Callahan kill, but called both of their timeouts trailing 12-6 amidst a 6-0 Utah State run.

Callahan snapped a 7-0 Aggie span with a kill, and BYU got back on track with a trio of Kemavor-Davis double blocks and two Hannah Billeter aces as the Cougars reeled off eight straight, all with Billeter serving, to tie the set at 15, forcing both USU timeouts in the process.

BYU began to pull away on a series of Kemavor quick hitters, making way for a Barbero ace, three Little Chambers kills and a Davis kill from the back row that brought about match point. Davis wrapped things up two plays later with a cross court kill, 25-22.
