THE COUGARS. BYU women’s soccer (5-2-1, 0-1 Big 12) suffered its second loss of the season, 2-1, to open Big 12 play at Arizona State on Thursday, Sept. 18 at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Since joining the Big 12 Conference in 2023, this was the first year the Cougars lost their conference opener. After being held off for the majority of the match, Presley Freeman broke through the Sun Devil backline and scored with five minutes left to play. Despite the loss, BYU goalkeeper Paiton Collins made a career-high five saves on the night.
THE MOUNTAINEERS. West Virginia (5-2-1, 0-0-1 Big 12) played at UCF to open Big 12 play, battling to a scoreless draw on Thursday, Sept. 18. The Mountaineers were outshot for the first time this season, 14-8, with four shots on frame compared to West Virginia’s one. WVU’s goalkeeper made three stops on the night to hold the clean sheet for her team.
COUGARS VS. MOUNTAINEERS. The Cougars and Mountaineers have played just once in 2009 when BYU beat West Virginia, 1-0 at the Penn State Invitational. This will be the first matchup between the two teams on South Field.
