THE BYU COUGARS. BYU women’s soccer (6-3-1, 1-2 Big 12) earned its first Big 12 win of the season with a 3-0 shutout victory against Cincinnati Saturday, Sept. 27 at South Field. Freshman midfielder Mia Lopez scored her first career brace and was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week. Senior Mackenzee Vance scored a penalty kick for her first goal of the year. Vance and Presley Freeman also tallied their first assists of the season in the conference victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Paiton Collins made a diving save at the end of the match to hold the Bearcats scoreless, tallying her fifth shutout of the year. The Cougars have dropped out of the rankings for the first time since the beginning of August, but are still receiving votes.
THE HOUSTON COUGARS. Houston (6-1-3, 1-1-1 Big 12) dropped its first match of the year at Colorado, 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 28 at Prentup Field. Colorado outshot Houston 13-7, with six shots on goal compared to UH’s four. Despite the loss, Houston goalkeeper Lexi Gonzalez had five saves during the match.
BYU VS. HOUSTON. BYU and Houston have met just once previously, with the Cougs leading the series, 1-0. BYU and Houston played on South Field last year, and the BYU Cougars defeated the Houston Cougars 3-0 for its final home game of the regular season. Current starters Avery Frischknecht and Lucy Kesler recorded goals in that game.
