Cougs return to South Field Thursday evening

Thursday’s contest kicks off a three-game homestand to close out BYU’s regular-season home slate.

PROVO, Utah — BYU women’s soccer returns to South Field to face Arizona on Thursday evening.

THE BYU COUGARS. BYU women’s soccer (7-4-2, 2-3-1 Big 12) fell to then-No. 14 Baylor on Friday, Oct. 10 in Waco, Texas. After taking the lead twice, courtesy of goals from Mattyn Summers-Oviatt and Ellie Walbruch, the Bears scored three unanswered goals to take the 4-2 Big 12 victory. Walbruch had a season-high seven shots and added her sixth goal of the season, leading the Cougs. With her goal against Baylor, Summers-Oviatt has now scored in back-to-back games, her first goals as a Cougar. BYU freshman Mia Goettsche added an assist in the game against the Bears, putting her at the top of the leaderboard for the Cougs with Mika Krommenhoek, each with three assists on the year. 

THE WILDCATS. Arizona (7-7, 2-4 Big 12) has dropped three Big 12 matches in a row, the last being a 1-0 loss against Utah on Friday, Oct. 10. The Wildcats have been shut out in all three losses, and have not scored since their 3-1 win against OSU on Sunday, Sept. 28. Aurora Gaines leads her team in goals on the season with four, and Sami Baytosh leads in assists with four.

COUGARS VS. WILDCATS. BYU and Arizona have played 14 times previously, with the Cougars leading the overall series 11-3. The teams played in Arizona last season when the Wildcats ended up on top, notching the 2-1 win over the Cougars. BYU has not beaten Arizona since 2012.
